So, isn’t this a good time to start teaching skills again—building people up, just as we did after the Second World War, and putting people’s real needs first?

Back then, we didn’t have endless channels, smartphones, or reality TV. We had a country to rebuild and a generation to lift. The answer wasn’t another talent show or a celebrity payoff. It was skills. Real, practical, useful skills.

We set up training centres, apprenticeships, and technical colleges. We taught a kid to be a joiner, a welder, an engineer, a nurse, a fitter, a builder. We gave them purpose, pride, and a wage at the end of it.

And you know what? It worked. People had a future. Communities had strength. Families had stability. We didn’t call it “content.” We called it investment—in people.

Isn’t that something worth talking about instead of Love Island or the latest dance-off?

Everywhere you look, it’s the same diet: drama, outrage, scandal, hype. Built to keep you watching, keep you angry, keep you clicking. But watching someone shout at another person on a beach in Majorca isn’t building anything. It’s not filling hospital beds, fixing bridges, wiring homes, or teaching our kids how to think for themselves.

We’re constantly sold this idea that entertainment is more important than education. That popularity is more valuable than capability. That being “famous” is the goal.

What a load of bollocks.

A society that forgets how to teach skills is a society that becomes weak. You can’t run a country on influencers and hashtags. You can’t heat homes with TikTok. You can’t build a future on a trending dance.

Something more important than endless hype over something and nothing?

It’s not just a waste of time—it’s a waste of people. Young people with potential are being left behind, not because they can’t learn, but because we’re not giving them the chance. Schools pushed them one way, life pushed them another, and now they’re stuck in a cycle with no way out.

We talk about mental health, cost of living, crime, and broken lives—then ignore one of the biggest answers sitting right in front of us: skills, purpose, opportunity.

A real project. Real skills. Real opportunities. Helping real people build real lives.

Imagine what we could do if we got serious about this. Not in a flashy way. Not with another slogan and a press release. But with real places, real teachers, real tools, real work.

Imagine every town had a skills hub. A place where people could learn, no matter their age. School leavers. Career changers. Parents. People who’ve been out of work for years. Doesn’t matter. They walk in, they learn something useful, they walk out with confidence.

Give them a trade. Give them a skill. Give them a reason to get up in the morning.

We need more mentors, not more presenters. More workshops, not more studios. More doers, not more commentators.

This isn’t about going backwards. It’s about moving forward with our feet on the ground.

We’ve got the knowledge. We’ve got the technology. What we need is the will.

Surely that’s a conversation worth having.

We can keep watching other people live their fake lives on screen—or we can build real lives in the real world.
